In this two session class you will learn a fun and easy method to create a resist for indigo dye using a clay mixture that can be printed or painted onto fabric. Clay resist offers both clean solids and dreamy atmospheric shades, and can be used to create bold blue and white patterns or subtle gradations of blue values. In week one you will learn how to mix clay paste and experiment with different drawing and printing methods on your fabric, and we'll give you some tips for harvesting your own wild clay. In week two we will show you how to make two types of indigo vat (fructose and ferrous), how to dye your clay-coated fabric, and how to set and finish your work, while discussing the unique chemistry that makes this resist method work with indigo. Students will receive three 100% cotton bandannas, scoured and ready to dye, with which to try out this beautiful dyeing method.
